The BBC series came next and aired all over the world in two phases between and Again, Wight approved scripts, paid regular visits to the set, and was said to thoroughly enjoy the series.

A relatively unknown actor named Christopher Timothy gained almost immediate fame playing James Herriot and developed a genuine respect for the real Alf Wight. The Wight family reports that of all the actors they met during those years, Timothy was the one who kept most closely in touch. The James Herriot books have never been out of print since their debut. They have sold over 60 million copies worldwide, been translated into plus languages, and adapted for film and television.

For someone who started with practically nothing, it is a massive achievement. Providing an image of veterinarians as caring for people and animals both, the stories have inspired many to become vets themselves. Alf Wight died in at age 78 from pancreatic cancer in his home near Thirsk. In order to expedite the entrance process, visitors should avoid wearing clothing with metal attached, such as buckles, snaps, excess jewelry, bib overalls, wire in undergarments, etc.

Some institutions have both inside and outside visiting areas which may be used during appropriate times of the year.

During outside visiting, neither inmates nor visitors will be allowed to sit on the ground. Visitors may call ahead to determine if an inmate is on a no contact visiting restriction.

Video conferencing visits Some institutions may provide video conferencing visiting based on their available resources. Behavior while visiting Visitors must conduct themselves in an appropriate and courteous manner and must follow all visiting rules of the DOC, as well as any specific rules of the institution in which the inmate is incarcerated. Visitors appearing to be under the influence of intoxicants will not be allowed to visit. Whether visits are outside or inside, parents are responsible for the supervision of their children.

Any child leaving the "visiting area" must be accompanied by an adult. Excessive displays of affection are not permitted. Inmates may embrace and kiss visitors at the beginning and end of each visit. Inmates may hold their own children who are age 5 or under.
