Wound botulism may happen after traumatic injuries, such as motorcycle crashes, and surgeries. Be alert to signs of infection. Several babies in Texas have become ill with infant botulism after using honey pacifiers. Do not give honey or products made with it, including honey pacifiers, to children younger than 12 months. Most infant botulism cases cannot be prevented because the bacteria that causes the disease is in soil and dust.

Honey is safe for people 1 year of age and older. Diagnosis of infant botulism is confirmed after testing a stool or specimen of enema. If the doctor suspects botulism, treatment with an anti-toxin should begin immediately, without waiting for test results to come back. Conditions with similar symptoms to botulism include stroke , myasthenia gravis , and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
If the toxin is identified in the food, stomach, vomit, feces, or intestinal contents, a definitive diagnosis can be made. Those with respiratory problems will be on a ventilator, and they may need the ventilator for weeks or months, as well as intensive nursing. Over time, the paralysis may improve. A patient with suspected botulism will immediately be given injections of antitoxins, even before diagnostic test results have returned.
If the infection results from a wound, the wound needs to be treated surgically. The area around the wound is removed, in a process known as debridement. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent any secondary infection. In most cases, infant botulism has no long-term effects.

Use only good quality produce fruits, vegetables that do not have any cuts, bruises or moulds. The food being preserved must be rinsed clean using cold drinking water before canning. Use separate cutting boards for produce, and raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood. Sanitize all work surfaces before and after preparing food.
Label and date all home canned foods before you store them in a cool, dry place. Once the container has been opened, refrigerate leftovers, and use within one week.
